I think we should get away from what genre of mtn biking do you do. Let's be honest, the majority is cross country, period. Most of us have to pedal up to go down. And, if you took a poll from downhillers and freeriders, I am sure most of them pedal up to go down when they are not at a ski mountain. And in my humble opinion, that is probably the majority of the time they are on the bike as well.
BUT, I do enjoy the technology that comes from all aspects of mtn biking that flows freely amongst all two wheelers.
I ride a 6.5 inch travel mtn bike but consider most of my rides cross country. I also believe the bike doesn't make you one type or another.

My man Scotty showed me that hauling ass through a single track whether it be up or down, friends yelling in excitement, impromptu races happening on the trail, laughing at the wrecks, riding in the rain, high fives after a cleaned section, tinkering with bikes, changing parts for upgrades, gathering on a weekend, stopping for lunch and a drink and a laugh, snapping photos on the trail, finishing up a ride and planning for the next, is one of the most gratifying experiences I could ever enjoy.
